Booster Shots for Eligible Students, Faculty and Staff
Requirements & Exemptions
All Duke University students, faculty and staff must submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination or have an approved medical or religious exemption by the beginning of the 2021 fall semester. Unvaccinated individuals must continue to wear masks and participate in regular surveillance testing until further notice.
Outside Vaccination Reporting

If you received the COVID-19 vaccine outside of the Duke Employee/Student vaccination clinic (e.g. pharmacy, health department, other institution), please submit your completed vaccination card to Duke Employee Health or Duke Student Health so your records can be updated accordingly.
At this time the eligible population for COVID boosters include:
- Duke employees, students, contractors, and volunteers who received their last dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines at least 5 months ago are eligible for their 1st booster.
- Duke employees, students, contractors, and volunteers who received their initial dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least 2 months ago and are 18 years of age or older are eligible for their 1st booster.
- Optional 2nd Booster Dose: Duke faculty, staff, and students who received a first booster dose of the Pfizer, Moderna, or J&J vaccines over 4 months ago and are 50 years of age or older can now receive a 2nd booster dose. Those younger than 50 who are considered severely immunocompromised can also receive a 2nd booster.
The CDC also said that individuals can choose any of the three boosters now authorized regardless of their original shot. Duke medical experts suggest that anyone who received the J&J vaccine preferentially get a booster shot of either Pfizer or Moderna, which have been proven highly effective in preventing infection and severe illness. A booster with the J&J vaccine remains an alternative for these individuals.
Duke is offering the Pfizer vaccine and J&J’s viral vector vaccine. The CDC has given individuals authorization to receive a Pfizer booster in place of either Moderna or J&J as a part of the CDC’s authorized “Mix and Match” vaccinations. If an individual still prefers to receive the Moderna vaccine, then please visit local pharmacies or federal vaccination locations. For more information, please visit the CDC's website.
Students interested in a booster shot can schedule an appointment with Student Health by calling an immunization nurse at 919.681.9355 option 1 or schedule an appointment at one of the locations listed below.
